Austin
Austin, Texas
The first day of work is like the first day of school
You’re nervous, you don’t know exactly where to go, you feel lost in the maze of cafeteria queues, and you don’t actually end up doing much work. And this first day was no exception.
I ran into someone I’ve seen before (only on the internet of all things; I must have better visual memory than […]
A drive down Austin memory lane
Austin has grown fast, but it has grown from a tiny urban core — meaning that we have less pre-World War II buildings than probably any other city our size in the South. Many neighborhoods quite close to downtown were developed in the 1960’s or later — the city basically ended 3 miles in […]
72 degrees, 72 miles per hour
It was one of those nights that convertibles were ostensibly purchased for, so I put the roof down as I turned the ignition and headed for home on the ass-opposite end of town, leaving the house of a friend. Not just any friend, but the only one I’ve truly made since I moved back […]
The morning after

Austin from alternate angles
From Zilker Park, the Mopac main lanes, and Riverside Drive at Ben White.
I don’t know about you, but I need to get out of town; I am getting so tired of photographing the same things over and over!
July 2009: Photographic month in review
It looks like I was jetsetting in the insular Club Med that is Travis County, but in reality, it was one of the most difficult months of my entire life.
Extracting all taste from architecture
Can you believe this building was bulldozed?
I don’t even like to drive down to San Antonio anymore, for half the reason I enjoyed it was seeing the Adams Extract building all alone on the prairie, commanding a strong presence with its post-war industrial optimism. It must have been demolished sometime after 2003, because if […]
Rutledge Elementary
Apparently there’s a Rutledge Elementary in far northwest Austin, in the Avery Ranch subdivision. I am guessing it has something to do with the road “Rutledge Spur” which is about a mile south of the school. Just so you know, I’m unrelated!

Their mascot is the “Ranchers”. Definitely unrelated.
